From 1 April 2026, deposit insurance covers up to GEL 50,000 per depositor per bank, up from GEL 30,000. Residents and non-residents, individuals and legal entities are covered, accounts at one bank are aggregated, and the cap applies regardless of the deposit currency.
For non-residents holding relocation funds or receiving income in Georgia, the insurance limit is now higher, but it is still calculated per bank and not separately for each currency. All accounts held by one depositor at the same bank are aggregated, so the placement of larger balances across banks may matter in practice. Foreign-currency deposits are covered, but the cap is denominated in lari, meaning its dollar or euro equivalent changes with the exchange rate. This is a relevant financial change for new residents and non-residents with Georgian accounts, particularly when choosing a bank and sizing cash reserves.
