Georgia Tightens Residence, Student-Migration and Sham-Marriage Rules

Published: 01.07.2026

The amendments change residence-permit rules, introduce a separate long-term multiple-entry D6 visa for minor students, and provide for checks of marriages to Georgian citizens. Sham marriages intended to obtain citizenship, a residence permit or another legal basis for stay become criminal offences, with possible deportation and a two- to ten-year re-entry ban.

According to sources, the package affects several major routes to legalise a stay: education, family-based residence and immigration enforcement. Some amendments take effect on July 1, 2026, while the main changes for students and spouses are scheduled for September 1, 2026, making the applicable document requirements and checks important for applicants. The rules primarily affect foreign students, spouses of Georgian citizens and people relying on family-based status; sham marriages carry particularly serious risks because of the criminal penalties. Anyone planning a move or already living in Georgia should pay attention and align applications with the relevant implementation date.
