Since March 1, 2026, most foreign nationals working for a Georgian employer must obtain the right to work and hold the relevant residence status or a D1 visa, unless an exception applies. The work right is tied to a specific employer; since July 2026, certain employers must also meet quota, foreign-staff and turnover requirements.
According to the sources, paid employment by a foreign national in Georgia now generally requires prior work authorization, followed by a D1 visa or a work residence permit depending on whether the person is outside or inside the country. Employers with larger numbers of foreign staff may also face annual quota, workforce-share and turnover requirements, which can affect hiring timelines and access to jobs. Employees who had active registration on March 1, 2026 must obtain the required work right and residence status by January 1, 2027. This is highly relevant for foreign nationals planning salaried employment and for companies hiring several foreigners, who should verify the documentation before work begins.
