Georgia to change rules for foreign students and spouses of citizens from September 1, 2026

Published: 20.08.2026

From September 1, 2026, residence permits for study will remain available to adult students of higher and professional education institutions, while minors will receive a separate long-term, multiple-entry D6 visa valid for up to one year. Rules for residence permits for spouses of Georgian citizens and certain other categories will also change, with a special commission able to verify the authenticity of a marriage.

According to sources, the change does not abolish visa-free entry generally but alters the way certain foreign nationals legalize their stay. Minor students will need the D6 visa instead of a study residence permit, while spouses of Georgian citizens will face additional marriage verification during the residence-permit process. This is especially relevant to families moving with children and foreign students, who should check the required document and application timing in advance. The change is worth following because it updates the previously announced migration reforms.
