Since October 1, 2025, Georgia has applied a graduated penalty system for overstaying. A residence permit may be cancelled if its holder is absent from the country for 183 days during any continuous 12-month period, with an exception for medical treatment abroad.
According to the source, extended absence from Georgia can now jeopardize a valid residence permit even when the document itself has not expired. Residence-permit holders therefore need to track not only the permit’s expiration date but also the number of days spent in the country. The rule is particularly important for remote workers, investors and other permit holders who spend substantial periods abroad. It should be considered when planning relocation and long trips outside Georgia.
