The list of French residence documents valid for stay and re-entry has been updated

Published: 17.11.2025

A list published in November 2025 specifies which French residence permits and temporary documents are recognised for stay and re-entry. Documents marked with a “#” in the comments field or indicating that stay is limited to Mayotte generally do not allow entry into other Schengen countries, subject to specified family-related exceptions.

The practical significance concerns travel and border checks rather than the underlying right to live in France. Holders of French residence documents need to check the exact wording on their permit: some documents may support re-entry to France but not unrestricted entry into other Schengen countries. This matters especially to students, workers and families planning travel within Europe after relocating. The list is worth consulting before cross-border travel or when relying on a temporary document instead of a valid residence permit.
