France Considers Automatic Renewal of Long-Term Residence Permits

Published: 22.01.2026

The French National Assembly adopted at first reading a bill on automatic renewal of multi-year residence permits and resident cards. The bill would treat the administration’s failure to respond within four months as implicit approval; it has been sent to the Senate and is not yet law.

According to the source, the bill could change the renewal process for long-term residence permits: no response within four months would count as approval, and applicants would have to be informed when third-party information was used in a non-renewal decision. It remains a parliamentary proposal, so the current application and waiting procedures are unchanged. If adopted, it could reduce uncertainty for holders of multi-year permits and resident cards, particularly when planning work and residence in France. It is worth monitoring for current long-term residents and future applicants, but the proposed rules should not yet be treated as effective.
