Amendments to Finland’s Aliens Act change the status of temporary protection recipients

Published: 15.06.2026

Amendments to Finland’s Aliens Act entered into force on 12 June 2026. A person under temporary protection may have only one valid basis for residence; when another permit was issued before 12 June, temporary protection ends automatically on 12 August 2026, along with the related right to social support.

According to sources, recipients of temporary protection must identify which residence basis remains valid after 12 June 2026. Switching to another status ends the temporary-protection basis, and permits issued before that date trigger an automatic end to temporary protection on 12 August 2026. This directly affects residence documents, access to social support and the legal basis for work and residence. The issue is especially important for people under temporary protection who have obtained a work, study or other residence permit, or registered a right of residence as an EU citizen or family member.
