The government has proposed a citizenship test in Finnish or Swedish, scheduled to be introduced at the beginning of 2027. Other proposals would speed up the deportation of rejected asylum seekers, broaden grounds for entry bans and allow asylum procedures to be transferred to safe third countries.
According to sources, this is a package of government proposals rather than a set of rules already fully in force. If adopted, citizenship applicants would face an additional Finnish- or Swedish-language test, while asylum seekers and undocumented migrants could encounter stricter and faster procedures. The measures primarily affect people planning to naturalise, seek asylum or remain in Finland without a formal status. Citizenship and asylum applicants should follow the legislative process closely, although the sources do not present these proposals as immediate changes to already submitted applications.
