EU Register Updates Information on Czech Residence and Temporary Protection Documents

Published: 25.06.2026

Updated EU information confirms the formats of Czech residence permits and temporary protection documents. Holders of a long-term visa for temporary protection issued in 2026 may use the visa sticker as their residence and travel document within Schengen until 31 March 2027.

According to official sources, Czech residence permits are issued as biometric ID cards, while temporary protection documents may take the form of a visa sticker or a PDF confirmation of an extension. This matters mainly when people under temporary protection cross the Schengen area’s external border, as the document combined with a passport confirms their visa-free travel entitlement. Visas issued for temporary protection in 2026 are valid until 31 March 2027; certain older identity cards expiring after 3 August 2026 must be replaced before that date. Relocating people and current residents should check the type and expiry date of their document because it determines how they can prove their status and travel.
