Czechia Limits Temporary Protection for People Holding Status in Another Country

Published: 18.08.2026

Czechia does not accept temporary protection applications from foreigners who have already applied for or received such protection in another EU country, except in certain family-reunification cases. Holding another long-term residence permit or visa issued by a third country may also affect the granting or extension of protection.

According to UNHCR, Czech temporary protection is tied to the absence of an equivalent status in another EU country. This limits the ability to switch to Czechia after applying for or receiving protection elsewhere and makes coordinated planning especially important for families. The rule primarily affects Ukrainians and other people seeking protection, including those relying on family reunification. Applicants who already hold a foreign residence permit or visa should assess its impact before applying in Czechia.
