Czechia Approves Digitalisation of Foreigners’ Residence Procedures

Published: 21.10.2026

The Czech Senate approved a bill to digitalise the issuance and cancellation of foreigners’ residence permits. The proposal provides for electronic processing from 2029 and mandatory registration of EU citizens staying in the country for more than 90 days from 2030; it does not relax residence-permit requirements.

According to the source, Czechia plans to move residence administration and permit procedures online from 2029, while making registration mandatory for EU citizens staying longer than 90 days from 2030. For applicants, this means a gradual shift toward digital interaction with migration authorities, not easier access to residence permits. Stronger grounds for cancelling residence permits and greater responsibility for guarantors will be particularly relevant to employers, inviting organisations and foreigners with long-term status. People planning a move should monitor this development as a future procedural overhaul, although it does not immediately introduce new application requirements.
