Czechia Prepares a New Act on the Entry and Residence of Foreigners

Published: 14.07.2026

The Czech Interior Ministry has submitted a draft new Act on the Entry and Residence of Migrants, intended to replace the current framework and take effect on 1 January 2029. The draft provides for electronic applications through the ICAS system, mandatory registration for EU citizens, and greater responsibility for guarantors, including employers.

According to the sources, this is a broad redesign of migration procedures rather than an immediate rule change; the proposed effective date is 1 January 2029. For future applicants, the draft could mean electronic applications and data exchange through ICAS, while EU citizens would face mandatory registration when staying in the country. Greater responsibility for employers and other guarantors would be particularly relevant to workers and companies sponsoring foreign nationals. People planning a long-term move should monitor the bill, but current applications remain governed by the existing framework.
