Czechia’s New Foreigners’ Stay Law Took Effect in January 2026

Published: 03.11.2025

The new law provides for a digital foreigners’ residence register, a new registration system for EU citizens intending to stay in Czechia for more than 90 days, and a stronger role for a guarantor of the purpose of stay. It also creates a special five-year residence permit for Ukrainians with temporary protection; since 2024, the period of humanitarian accommodation has been reduced from 150 to 90 days.

According to the OECD, from January 2026 Czechia is moving toward more digital residence administration and introducing new requirements for some foreign nationals. EU citizens planning to stay for more than 90 days face a new registration system, while other applicants may need stronger confirmation from a person or institution guaranteeing the purpose of stay. Ukrainians with temporary protection are affected by the special five-year residence permit provided by the law, while recipients of humanitarian accommodation must account for the shorter accommodation period. The changes are worth attention for anyone planning a long-term move or a change of residence basis in Czechia.
