Czechia Advances a New Law on the Entry and Residence of Foreigners

Published: 14.07.2026

The Czech government is advancing a new version of the law on the entry and residence of foreigners. The draft provides for digital interaction through the ICAS system, mandatory registration of EU citizens staying longer than 90 days, and additional duties for guarantors such as employers and educational institutions; implementation is planned for 2029.

According to the sources, the draft does not change the core grounds for obtaining residence rights, but it would move applications and communication with the authorities into a digital system. For EU citizens, long-term stays would become more formalised through mandatory registration, while foreigners and their guarantors would face new electronic procedures and responsibilities. A separate package of tighter conditions for people under temporary protection from Ukraine is still being discussed and could affect access to humanitarian benefits and requirements concerning time spent in Czechia. People planning a move should monitor the bill, but the current residence and registration rules remain applicable until it enters into force.
