Czechia Extends Temporary Protection for Ukrainians and Introduces a Five-Year Permit for Some Refugees

Published: 07.02.2026

Amendments extend temporary protection for Ukrainians in Czechia until at least 31 March 2027. Refugees who have lived in the country for more than two years and can demonstrate stable housing, employment or independent income, as well as children’s school enrolment, may obtain a special five-year biometric residence permit with full labour-market access.

According to the source, temporary protection for Ukrainians remains in place until 31 March 2027, while economically self-sufficient people gain a more stable alternative to annual visa renewals. This may reduce administrative churn for those already living in Czechia, working, or relying on independent income and able to document their family’s housing and other conditions. The measure primarily affects Ukrainian refugees who have been in the country for more than two years and employers who need longer-term confirmation of work rights. People planning or already undergoing relocation should pay attention because the five-year status may materially affect their documents, renewal timelines and employment security.
