EU Citizens Must Register Residence in Cyprus Through MEU1

Published: 07.06.2026

EU and EEA citizens planning to stay in Cyprus for more than three months must obtain a MEU1 registration certificate within four months of arrival. Non-EU family members of EU citizens generally apply for a separate residence card under the MEU2 procedure.

For EU citizens, moving to Cyprus involves more than entering with a passport or identity card: anyone staying for more than three months must register the basis of residence. Depending on the case, applicants may need evidence of employment or self-employment, study, sufficient resources and health insurance, while family members must provide proof of the relationship. The rule is especially relevant to EU citizens planning to live, work or study in Cyprus long term and to their families. It is a practical relocation step that should be scheduled soon after arrival because the application deadline is four months.
