Cyprus clarifies immigration-permit conditions and retention of permanent status

Published: 12.03.2026

Applications for immigration permits must be filed in Nicosia with original documents that are officially translated and certified, and biometric data is required. The permanent residence right ends if the applicant and dependants do not take up residence in Cyprus within one year of approval or remain absent from the country for two years.

According to the official portal, an immigration permit requires compliance with document-submission and biometric procedures and, after approval, actual residence in Cyprus within the prescribed period. For a person planning a move, approval alone is not a substitute for entering the country and establishing residence. Extended absence can also result in the loss of the permanent residence right, so the permit is not entirely independent of actual residence. This matters especially to applicants who intend to spend substantial periods outside Cyprus while retaining their status.
