Since January 31, 2025, designated officers have had explicit authority to cancel visas, eTAs, work permits and study permits on a case-by-case basis, including for criminal inadmissibility. Cancellation may result in the loss of temporary resident status and removal from Canada.
According to the source, designated officers can now cancel temporary immigration documents on an individual basis where criminal inadmissibility is involved. For temporary residents, this creates a risk of losing a visa, eTA or permit and subsequently being removed from Canada. The rule is particularly relevant to workers, students and others holding temporary status, because an issued document does not eliminate the possibility of later checks. People relocating to Canada should therefore consider admissibility requirements both when applying and after arrival.
