Canada strengthens oversight of temporary visas and status compliance

Published: 02.09.2026

IRCC and CBSA may cancel temporary resident visas, eTAs, work permits and study permits on a case-by-case basis. Foreign nationals must leave Canada when their authorized stay ends; eligible applicants may apply to restore status within 90 days of losing it.

According to sources, Canadian authorities are placing greater emphasis on verifying that temporary visitors will leave on time, detecting fraud and enforcing authorized periods of stay. Violating status conditions may lead to a removal order and jeopardize future admission, while misrepresentation can result in a five-year entry ban. This matters most to visitors, students and temporary workers who need to track document expiry dates and apply promptly for an extension or restoration of status. Prospective applicants should take the policy into account when preparing documents and planning their stay.
