Sponsors applying for family reunification must demonstrate net monthly income of at least 110% of the guaranteed minimum, plus 10% for each additional dependent. The exemption period for recognised refugees has been shortened, beneficiaries of subsidiary protection must wait two years, and the minimum age for reunification or family formation with a partner has been raised to 21.
According to the European Commission source, family reunification has become less accessible for refugees and beneficiaries of subsidiary protection. Families must now plan around documented income, the number of dependants, and the date on which protection was granted, since waiting periods and thresholds differ by status. The change is especially significant for people expecting to bring a partner or children to Belgium after receiving protection. This group should account for the new conditions before submitting an application or committing to relocation costs.
