The registration fee for Belgian citizenship increased from €150 to more than €1,000 and reached €1,030 in January 2026, with annual indexation. The declaration procedure generally requires at least five years of uninterrupted legal residence, permanent residence status, proof of integration and economic participation, and knowledge of one of Belgium’s official languages.
According to the sources, the citizenship pathway has become significantly more expensive, and the registration fee is not refunded if an application is refused. Applicants must also plan for long-term evidence of residence, language ability, integration, and employment or self-employment. This is particularly relevant to non-EU nationals who view citizenship as a long-term route to EU mobility rights. Anyone planning a move with naturalisation in mind should factor the higher cost and eligibility requirements into their residence strategy from the outset.
