Temporary protection in Austria for displaced persons extended until 4 March 2028

Published: 21.10.2026

Residence permits issued under Austria’s temporary protection regime are valid until 4 March 2028. Eligible Ukrainian nationals may transition to a renewable Red-White-Red Card Plus, subject to requirements including at least 12 months of fully insured employment in the previous 24 months, sufficient income and German at A1 level.

According to the source, Ukrainians under temporary protection retain a lawful right of residence in Austria until 4 March 2028, and that right continues independently of the expiry date printed on an existing ID card. For people planning a longer-term relocation, the RWR+ route allows employment or self-employment without a separate work permit and is not tied to a specific employer. In the longer term, this can provide continuity of residence beyond temporary protection and may lead to an EU permanent residence permit after five years, provided the integration requirements are met. The development is primarily relevant to Ukrainian residents, workers and self-employed people, who should review the transition conditions and retain evidence of employment, income and German-language skills.
