Australia is introducing a migration package that strengthens enforcement against visa overstayers, limits student visa hopping and family applications, and adds a No Further Stay condition to future visitor visas. Second- and third-year Working Holiday extensions will be subject to ballots, regional-work requirements and new caps, while applicants in priority sectors will receive processing priority.
According to the sources, the changes affect several major relocation routes at once: study, visitor visas, Working Holiday and skilled migration. Students will face tighter limits on extending their stay through course changes, while most new students and graduate-visa holders will be restricted from bringing family members; visitor visas will no longer generally serve as a route to extending a stay. Working Holiday extensions will become more competitive, with caps of 45,000 places for a second year and 5,000 for a third year, while UK citizens remain exempt from the regional-work requirement under the bilateral arrangement. This matters most to students, backpackers, families and applicants in priority occupations, who should factor the package into visa planning as implementation continues over the next 12 months.
