Armenia Changes Residence-Status Rules for Foreigners

Published: 03.11.2026

From November 1, Armenia has temporary and permanent residence statuses: temporary status is issued for up to one year, permanent status for five years, while the special status is no longer granted. Applications are submitted through a unified electronic platform and decisions are made within 30 days; state fees have increased, and a work-visa fee will be introduced on January 1, 2027.

According to the sources, applicants must now use the new electronic procedure, provide biometrics in person, and may hold only one status confirming lawful residence. Those absent from Armenia for 183 days or more must notify the platform within 10 days, although this requirement does not apply to permanent residents whose status is based on investment or exceptional services. The changes are especially important for foreigners applying on the basis of Armenian origin, investment, family ties or entrepreneurship, as well as workers who will need a work visa. Anyone applying after November 1 should pay attention because the filing process, administrative deadlines and costs have changed.
