After the previous restrictions were lifted, residents may buy US dollars or deposit them into an account without prior Central Bank approval, although cash-peso purchases remain capped at US100 per month. Non-residents still need prior approval to buy foreign currency through the official market; from July 2026, banks may also receive dollars into salary accounts.
The distinction between resident and non-resident status has practical consequences even during the relocation process: access to official currency purchases and banking operations differs between the two groups. For foreigners who have regularised their status, this makes holding and using dollars easier, while tourists and people awaiting residence still face additional restrictions. Dollar salary accounts are particularly relevant to people paid by an Argentine employer. Relocation budgets should account for the fact that holding dollars in an account and purchasing them through the official market are governed differently.
