Health insurance and stated purpose of entry required for foreigners without permanent residence

Published: 20.09.2026

Since July 2025, foreigners without permanent residence must have health insurance covering their stay and sign a declaration of the purpose of their visit. Border officers may refuse entry if they believe a visitor intends to live or work in Argentina, while routine treatment in public hospitals may require insurance or payment for people without permanent status.

For short-term visitors and people planning to regularise their stay through temporary residence, crossing the border now requires insurance and a credible stated purpose of travel. Repeated tourist entries while effectively living in Argentina have become a less reliable strategy, and people without permanent status may face additional medical costs. The change primarily affects tourists, digital nomads, students and workers who have not obtained permanent residence. It is worth factoring into relocation plans because it affects both entry procedures and everyday healthcare expenses.
